British Rally Championship Debut, Cambrian Rally 2024
The Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally has always been one of those events that holds a special place for me, and this year, it was even more incredible as we made our British Rally Championship (BRC) debut on these iconic stages. 2nd in class, 2nd in BRC National, 22nd overall in the National, and 34th overall slotting into the interclub results. Safe to say, it didn’t disappoint!
The stages were absolutely stunning, and they brought back so many memories from my days spectating on Rally GB with my dad. Never in my wildest dreams as a kid standing by those very roads did I imagine I’d one day be competing on them in the BRC! To be honest, I’m still pinching myself.
Now, you might be wondering why we decided to enter the BRC, especially since it wasn’t exactly part of our original season plan. The answer is simple: we were lucky enough to be in a position to do it, and because why not?! It’s been a goal for years, and I’ll never take it for granted to be able to live out that childhood dream. Plus, it turns out I needed something fun for Jordan’s birthday present, so I thought, “Why not register for the BRC?!”
It wasn’t until we saw our names on the BRC results, ahead of 1984 World Champion Stig Blomqvist, that it hit us – this wasn’t just a childhood dream. 2nd overall in the BRC National was a huge achievement, and to top it off, our maths seem to suggest we finished ahead of five-time champion Jimmy McRae in the National Championship! Now that’s a result I’m seriously proud of.
Coming into the weekend, my goal was simple: don’t break the car (because there was no time to fix it this week) and aim for a clean run. Our main battle was really in the Pirelli Welsh Rally Championship, trying to go quicker than Martin and Marie to help our class cause. We were doing just that, picking up time on every stage. Sadly, we passed Martin on the side of SS6, which wasn’t how we’d wanted to fight for the Welsh W10, but it’s now down to the final round at the Wyedean!
This weekend also wrapped up our BTRDA Rally campaign, which has been nothing short of amazing. We’ve had a clean streak on every event, and I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve achieved. Massive credit to the Ignition Motorsport team, Jordan, and all the service crew who made this possible. They ensured we had a reliable car all season, and more importantly, kept the banter flowing – especially over a pint of Tutts Clump Proper Cider!
It’s not over yet! Next weekend, we’ve got Izzie Holman joining us in the “silly seat” for the Malton Forest Rally, with Jordan teaming up with Colin Minton in the Ignition Motorsport R5. Exciting times ahead!
